GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. (Nov. 19, 6 p.m. ET) -- Paragon Die & Engineering Co. is going big with its plans to diversify its production. Very big. The Grand Rapids-based toolmaker invested $3.5 million on a double-gantry five-axis milling machine that measures 60 feet by 12 feet — or about the size of a typical carwash. November 19, 2009
TORONTO (Updated Nov. 17, 10:20 a.m. ET) -- Major Canadian private equity firm Onex Corp. is planning an initial public offering for Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., according to a report in the Toronto Globe & Mail. Onex plans to sell its stake in the Bolton, Ontario-based maker of injection presses, robots, PET preform molds and hot runners in the next few months, potentially raising US$1.3 billion, according to the report. LIVONIA, MICH. (Nov. 12, 8:45 p.m. ET) -- The news is in -- SPE tonight revealed the winners in its annual Automotive Innovation Awards competition. This year's grand prize goes to a radio housing developed by Delphi Automotive LLP and chosen by GM for use in its Tahoe sport utility vehicle. BOLTON, ONTARIO (Nov. 10, 4 p.m. ET) -- Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd. is contracting out its parts distribution activities. Husky Chief Operating Officer Keith Carlton said the move will improve distribution because Caterpillar Logistics Services Inc. is close to a primary shipping hub in Louisville, Ky., and it offers longer shipping hours. OWENSBORO, KY. (Nov. 6, 11:10 a.m. ET) -- Tool and die maker Industrial Mold & Machine Co. is expanding and adding larger and more efficient equipment so it can offer a wider range of services to its customers. The Owensboro-based company is investing more than $1.3 million to add 16,000 square feet to its existing 23,000 square feet. November 6, 2009
CHICAGO (Oct. 30, 12:15 p.m. ET) -- Chicago and Orlando each want to be the home of the 2012 and 2015 NPE trade show, and big-name politicians are making their case. SPI President and CEO Bill Carteaux met on Oct. 28 with Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley -- in Daley’s office -- and Carteaux has also discussed the issue with the mayor of Orange County, Fla., and the governors of Illinois and Florida. SPI’s 12-person NPE executive committee will have the final vote, and Carteaux said they plan to make a decision by the end of the year. For years, mold makers have used com­puters to aid in designing and manufacturing tools. But now they are pushing computers to do more and, in the process, improving lean manufacturing. (Oct. 23, 2:55 p.m. ET) -- Despite the economic downtown and a smaller presence, MassPlastics 2009 remains an important New England event, according to organizers. “We do the show because it is a statement for the region. It is not just to show the history of plastics, but to show that there is lot of diversity here, from medical devices to defense work to staple consumer goods -- that’s the primary reason,” said David McKeehan, president of the North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce.
