CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA (Nov. 6, 11:05 p.m. ET) -- Investigations are expected to be finalized later this month into claims Canadian and U.S. producers of linear low-density polyethylene have been dumping the resin on the Australian market to undercut Melbourne-based plastics company Qenos Pty. Ltd.

HOUSTON (Nov. 5, 4:30 p.m. ET) -- Higher North American polyethylene prices helped Westlake Chemical Corp. post solid financial results in the third quarter. Houston-based Westlake reported Nov. 3 that its third-quarter profit grew almost 9 percent vs. the year-ago quarter to almost $30 million. The gain occurred even as Westlake’s third-quarter sales fell 41 percent to about $630 million.

Updated Nov. 6, 3:40 p.m. ET) -- Speciality chemicals company Clariant AG's Pigments & Additives division, which includes the company's colorants and additives for plastics, recorded a 25 percent drop in sales to 384 million Swiss francs ($377 million) in the third quarter of 2009, Clariant announced on Nov. 4. The company’s Masterbatches division, however, reported “broad-based demand recovery,” with improvements in the textile and automotive markets. The division reported a profit of CHF 37 million ($36.3 million) on sales of CHF 305 million ($299.6 million).

PORTLAND, ORE. (Nov. 4, 4:35 p.m. ET) -- Dennis Denton sees the new 30-million-pound PET recycling plant that he and two other partners are building in St. Helens, Ore., as the prototype and forerunner of the way plastics will be recycled in the future -- not just the first PET recycling plant in the Pacific Northwest. Long-range, perhaps three years from now, Denton said ORPET plans to form joint ventures and build recycling plants with companies that need recycled PET, such as firms that thermoform clamshell containers.

INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 3, 4:25 p.m. ET) -- Changes in the resin distribution market have created a need for processors to expand producer relationships and explore new distributor/broker options, according to Bill Bowie, chief operating officer for Resin Technology Inc. He added that processors also could benefit by evaluating their general product offerings and educating themselves on offshore resin options.

CLEVELAND (Nov. 3, 4 p.m. ET) -- Ferro Corp. has priced a planned offering of 35.75 million shares of its common stock at $5.60 a share. Ferro said it expects to receive net proceeds of nearly $187 million from this offering, assuming the underwriters do not exercise their over-allotment option.

LIMA, OHIO (Nov. 3, 3:55 p.m. ET) -- Start-up compounder Planet Friendly Polymers plans to open a plant in Lima by the end of the year. The firm plans to spend $1.3 million on the 50,000-square-foot plant. Some of the plant’s output will be sold on the open market, with the rest going to products marketed by a sister company that sells plastic containers and storage products.
