MEXICO CITY (Nov. 5, 11:35 a.m. ET) -- Coca-Cola FEMSA SA de CV plans to extend the use of its PET short-height bottle finishes from Mexico to all its markets in Latin America within 12 months. The design cuts the weight of the company’s 16-ounce bottles to 20.5 grams, and has saved the bottler about $10 million in PET resin annually.

MIAMI (Oct. 28, 5:10 p.m. ET) -- Clive Roux wasted no time getting his feet wet as leader of the world’s largest design trade association. Nine days after assuming the post of executive director of the Dulles, Va.-based Industrial Designers Society of America, Roux — a long-time former official with Netherlands-based Philips Design — was on stage in Miami addressing a crowd of nearly 500 at IDSA’s annual international conference.

MEBANE, N.C. (Oct. 14, 4:30 p.m. ET) — Injection molder Nypro Inc. has invested $1 million in solar energy startup, Morgan Solar Inc. It is the first investment made by New Ventures Group LLC, which Clinton, Mass.-based Nypro formed as a subsidiary 13 months ago to invest in innovative and green technologies.

MIAMI (Oct. 2, 4:40 p.m. ET) — After years of discussion and effort, the Industrial Designers Society of America recently approved the formation of a China Chapter. Its champions hope the move will help to advance the practice of design in creating social as well as business value in China, while also allowing IDSA to serve as a non-political networking channel and clearinghouse of design-related information across the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao.

TROY, MICH. (Sept. 16, 9:20 p.m. ET) -- One number is pushing innovation in the North American auto industry: 35.5. That’s the average number of miles per gallon that the passenger vehicle fleet will have to hit by 2016 according to new rules announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
The least expensive way to improve fuel economy is to reduce vehicle weight, and reduce it everywhere, so automakers are open to new ideas and new materials.

DULLES, VA. (Sept. 9, 1:50 p.m. ET) — After a five-month search, North America’s largest industrial design trade association has chosen a South African with worldwide business experience to take its helm. The Dulles-based Industrial Designers Society of America announced today that Clive Roux will become its new executive director on Sept. 14, replacing Frank Tyneski, who resigned in April after 18 months in the post.
