US water brand adopts “biodegradable” PET
DANA POINT, CALIF. (July 28, 2009) -- Californian mineral water bottler Aquamantra has adopted Eco-Pure modified PET resin for its bottles, which is claimed to provide biodegradability without compromising conventional mechanical recycling activities.

Snappy innovation for plastics packaging
OYONNAX, FRANCE (July 21, 2009) -- The breakage-resistant property of plastics is an advantage in most applications but not in production of ampoules, which are opened by snapping away the neck. Now, the French plastic processor Sériplast has developed a technology that uses irradiation to embrittle the neck of a polypropylene (PP) ampoule, allowing it to be "snapped" open without the risk of sharp glass splinters.

US renewing antidumping duties on Asian plastic bags
WASHINGTON (July 14, 2009) -- The U.S. Department of Commerce is conducting an annual administrative review of a 2004 antidumping order on imports of plastic grocery and shopping bags from Malaysia, China and Thailand. The agency will announce its preliminary ruling on whether to continue existing antidumping duties bags imported from China on July 22.

Thailand promoting biodegradable bag project
BANGKOK (July 14, 2009) -- BASF SE is leading a pilot project to promote the use of biodegradable bags in Thailand. The pilot project, which will run from July to December in the Samut Songkhram Province, aims to use biodegradable bags to collect household organic waste and produce high-quality compost that will serve as organic fertilizer for the purpose of soil improvement.

Thailand’s Polyplex selective about global expansion
BANGKOK (July 14, 2009) -- Film manufacturer Polyplex (Thailand) Public Co. Ltd. has put on hold US$70 million (478.06 million yuan) worth of projects due to uncertain market conditions. However, US$36.64 million (250.19 million yuan) in projects remain underway.

Bemis to acquire Alcan Packaging Food Americas
NEENAH, WIS. (July 7, 2009) -- North America’s largest film and sheet maker just got a whole lot bigger. Bemis Co. Inc., a packaging giant based in Neenah, Wis., announced July 6 that it will spend $1.2 billion to acquire the Food Americas business of Alcan Packaging from Rio Tinto plc. Bemis has a partnership venture in Guangzhou.

China’s manufacturers mull ways to boost industry

HONG KONG (June 30, 2009) -- Stung by the collapse of their export markets, Chinese manufacturers should not look for that big volume business to return and instead ought to explore new areas such as manufacturing products targeted at niche markets, using better industrial design and looking inward at Chinese culture for inspiration. That, at least, was some of the advice coming from manufacturers and industrial designers -- like Eric Chan, a native of Guangdong province and now president of industrial design firm Ecco Design Inc. in New York -- at a Hong Kong forum on reinvigorating the sagging manufacturing industries in the Pearl River Delta.

International Plastics Design award winners announced


Hospira's award-winning iSecure syringe
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Pharmaceutical and medical delivery company Hospira Inc. used multishot molding and in-mold assembly to create the iSecure Syringe with four different pieces and three materials. The product, designed by Hospira and molded by MGS Manufacturing Group, won the Industrial Designers Society of America/Plastics News Design Award at the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc.’s 2009 International Plastics Design Competition. The design is simple and straightforward at first glance -- with the different parts labeled in the mold to designate the first, second and third steps for the nurse administering the drug -- but integrating that into a complex manufacturing piece in a clean room environment was very impressive, said one of the judges.

Group seeks moratorium on degradable PET containers
SONOMA, CALIFORNIA (June 24, 2009) -- The National Association for PET Container Resources called on brand owners and bottle makers to refrain from using PET containers with degradable additives. “We want the people making claims about bottles with degradable additives to first substantiate and document their claims” that there will be no adverse effect on the recycling stream or the next-life product, said the group’s executive director.

Husky reroutes spending into packaging, medical

CHICAGO (June 24, 2009) -- John Galt, top executive at Husky Injection Molding Systems Ltd., said a more-focused Husky is well-positioned to withstand a tough market for new-press sales. Husky is demonstrating at NPE2009 high-speed closure molding on a new HyCAP machine and its offerings in hot runners, production monitoring and preventative maintenance.

Greif signs deal with IBC maker Jielin Plastic Pipe
DELAWARE, OHIO (June 16, 2009) -- American industrial packaging firm Greif Inc. and China’s Zibo Jielin Plastic Pipe Manufacture Co. Ltd. have reached a strategic agreement to give Greif exclusive rights to market and sell Jielin’s intermediate bulk containers (IBC) worldwide.

PTI to introduce Globaline extrusion system at NPE
CHICAGO (June 16, 2009) -- Processing Technologies International LLC (PTI) is unveiling its new Globaline extrusion system that allows efficient short-run production of sheet at NPE2009. The system is especially designed for PTI’s strategy of expanding into areas such as Russia, Eastern Europe, South America, China and India where an extrusion line needs to handle a variety of jobs.
