LM Glasfiber builds wind blade facility in China
JIANGYIN, CHINA (March 12, 2010) -- Denmark-based wind turbine blade maker LM Glasfiber is strengthening its position in the Chinese market by building a fourth manufacturing facility in Jiangyin, Jiangsu province.

Chinese PP recycler filing IPO in Australia
QUANZHOU, CHINA (February 28, 2010) -- One of China’s largest makers of polypropylene filament yarns wants to use a stock offering in Australia to expand its business using recycled PP feedstock, believing a focus on green materials gives a cost advantage and better meets rising demand for eco-products.

Cereplast names Huang sales director for Asia
AKRON, OHIO (February 22, 2010) -- Bioresin maker Cereplast Inc. of Hawthorne, Calif. named Simon Huang as director of sales and marketing for Asia. Huang, born in Beijing, will be spending six months a year in China and the Asia-Pacific region.



Study quantifies PET bottle lightweighting
ALEXANDRIA, VA. (February 19, 2010) -- According to a newly-released industry study, between 2000 and 2008, the weight of 16.9-ounce, single-serve PET water bottles dropped by nearly 33 percent. In 2008 alone, the bottled water industry saved 445 million pounds of PET by reducing bottle weights.

US firm says temporary plastic walls save landfill space

LAS VEGAS (February 19, 2010) -- As a longtime carpenter and contractor, Douglas Spear is bothered by the mess caused by the removal of temporary walls made of drywall mounted on metal studs. He estimates that every 12-foot-high-by-70-foot-long temporary wall that is demolished sends about 1 ton of debris to the landfill. But now he has a recyclable alternative made from thermoformed plastic.

LAS VEGAS (February 18, 2010) -- Coca-Cola Co.’s new PlantBottle “will help to define the future of sustainable packaging” for the global beverage giant, according to a company official. Dasani PlantBottles are being used at the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

Audi's U.S. commercials blast single-use plastic products
MIAMI (February 9, 2010) -- Single-use plastic products makers took fire from an unusual source during this year's Super Bowl game -- commercials from German carmaker Audi AG for a "clean diesel" vehicle.

DONGGUAN, CHINA (February 8, 2010) -- Office equipment maker Intek America Inc., which last year launched a program to make some of its paper shredders carbon neutral, is hoping a partnership with Taiwanese bioplastics compounder Minima Technology Co. Ltd. will help it “green” its material choices.

Oxo-biodegradable additive suppliers rebut critics
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (February 7, 2010) -- A pair of oxo-biodegradable plastic additive makers have fired back at the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc.’s Bioplastics Council over claims related to biodegradability.

EuPR calls bioplastics and oxo-degradables unsustainable
LONDON (February 2, 2010) -- Europe's plastics waste generation nearly reached 25 million tons in 2008. Even though 51 percent of this amount has been recovered more effort is needed in order to fully realize its potential, according to the European Plastics Recyclers (EuPR).

US group questions oxo-degradability claims
WASHINGTON (February 2, 2010) -- The Bioplastics Council of the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. has joined the growing number of voices questioning the scientific validity of biodegradability claims made by producers of oxo-degradable and oxo-biodegradable products.

CNBM to build windmill blade factory in Tianjin
TIANJIN, CHINA (January 12, 2010) -- Beijing-based China National Building Material Group Corp. (CNBM) is investing 1 billion yuan ($146.5 million) to build a production base for windmill blades at the Lingang Industrial Park in the city of Tianjin.

Illinois firm buying biodegradable PET maker Planet Green
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (January 8, 2010) -- Planet Green Bottle Corp., a developer of biodegradable PET bottles, is being acquired by medical imaging firm Imagin Molecular Corp. Meantime, Planet Green has reached a joint venture agreement with Chinese plastics processor Fuli (Weihai) of Shandong province.

Market for renewable energy set to grow
WELLESLEY, MASS. (January 5, 2010) -- The global market for advanced materials and devices for renewable energy was worth an estimated $11.6 billion in 2009, but is expected to increase to $16.9 billion (115.4 billion yuan) in 2014, giving a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8 percent, according to a new research report.

US group issues testing protocols for degradable additives
WASHINGTON (December 28, 2009) -- The Washington-based Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers issued a set of voluntary testing protocols that materials suppliers and blow molders can use to evaluate the effect of degradable additives used in PET water bottles on the recycling stream.

Purac to produce PLA monomers in Thailand
GORINCHEM, NETHERLANDS (December 28, 2009) -- Netherlands-based Purac is to build a new lactides production plant in Thailand to manufacture feedstocks for bioplastics. Around 45 million euros (440.36 million yuan) is being invested in the unit, which is designed to produce both L-lactides and D-lactides to enable production of more heat resistant PLA grades.
