Bioplastics industry joins oxo-degradable debate

Thailand promoting biodegradable bag project
BANGKOK (July 14, 2009) -- BASF SE is leading a pilot project to promote the use of biodegradable bags in Thailand. The pilot project, which will run from July to December in the Samut Songkhram Province, aims to use biodegradable bags to collect household organic waste and produce high-quality compost that will serve as organic fertilizer for the purpose of soil improvement.

Teijin restructuring, exits NatureWorks PLA venture
OSAKA, JAPAN (July 7, 2009) -- Osaka-based Teijin Ltd. has ended its involvement in the NatureWorks LLC polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics business, transferring its 50 percent shareholding over to its joint venture partner Cargill Inc. The NatureWorks manufacturing plant in Blair, Neb., is currently the world’s largest PLA bioplastic production plant.

Tests show recyclers can separate PLA from PET
WASHINGTON (July 7, 2009) -- Some recyclers have been concerned that as more companies use bottles made from polylactic acid, those containers may contaminate the PET recycling stream. But tests at a full-scale recycler suggest that near infrared technology can effectively separate PLA and PET.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Strong growth in the wood-plastic composite market is prompting joint venture Chinese wood-plastic composite equipment maker Qinchuan-Future Plastic Machinery Co. Ltd. to consider an initial public offering, a company executive said in an interview at NPE2009. The Baoji, Shaanxi province-based company hopes to raise funds for an expansion to handle increasing demand in both China’s domestic wood-plastic composite market and in exports, said Wayne Song, director of one of the joint venture partners in the machinery maker.

Group seeks moratorium on degradable PET containers
SONOMA, CALIFORNIA (June 24, 2009) -- The National Association for PET Container Resources called on brand owners and bottle makers to refrain from using PET containers with degradable additives. “We want the people making claims about bottles with degradable additives to first substantiate and document their claims” that there will be no adverse effect on the recycling stream or the next-life product, said the group’s executive director.

Public projects boost China’s wood-plastic industry

GUANGZHOU (June 9, 2009) -- Despite the decline of overseas markets, China’s largely export-oriented wood-plastic composite manufacturers continue to expand, thanks to demand from domestic public projects such as post-earthquake reconstruction and China-hosted international events. For instance, Anhui Guofeng Wood-plastic Science & Technology Co. Ltd. confirmed that export demand has been contracting due to the global economic crisis. Meantime, domestic consumers have become more aware of wood-plastic composite materials.

Bioplastics companies keep a wary eye on oil
GUANGZHOU (June 2, 2009) -- A year ago, at the 2008 CMT Bioplastics Markets Conference held in Guangzhou, the rising price of oil was giving the industry a boost. With oil prices heading toward their peak that summer, plastics derived from non-petrochemical sources were becoming cost-competitive. At the 2009 conference, however, the situation had changed, prompting bioplastics companies to pin their hopes on other market drivers.
