Taiwan mandates recycling of PLA containers
HONG KONG (November 24, 2009) -- Taiwan will officially list polylactic acid containers as recyclable items by the end of November, and put into place arrangements for PLA recycling by March 1. Bioresin manufacturer NatureWorks LLC says the Taiwan government’s plan could help drive the recycling of products made from PLA.

Samsung design chief talks about sustainability efforts

Ford uses wheat straw and PP in Flex interior
FAIRLAWN, OHIO (November 23, 2009) -- A bio-based plastics additive developed by A. Schulman Inc. has won recognition for its use in Ford Motor Co.’s Flex crossover vehicle. The application was named a Blue Ribbon Finalist for an Environmental Innovation Award given by the automotive division of the Society of Plastics Engineers.

Coke rolling out bottles made from plant materials
ATLANTA (November 17, 2009) -- Coca-Cola Co. beverages will soon be arriving in new plastic bottles made partially from plant materials. Drinks bottled in the new PlantBottle packaging are being sent to store shelves in select worldwide markets.

Global bioplastics market to hit 900,000 tons
CLEVELAND, OHIO (November 15, 2009) -- Worldwide demand for bioplastics will increase more than fourfold to 900,000 tons in 2013, according to a new report. Western Europe was the largest market for bioplastics in 2008, accounting for 40 percent of world demand, but future growth will be driven largely by the Asia/Pacific region.

Study says bioplastics can replace traditional resins
UTRECHT, NETHERLANDS (November 15, 2009) -- A new market study published jointly by European Bioplastics and the European Polysaccharide Network of Excellence (EPNOE) at Utrecht University estimates it is technically possible to replace up to 90 percent of today’s polymer consumption with bio-based alternatives.

China to allow imports of whole PET scrap bottles
HANGZHOU, CHINA (November 13, 2009) -- The Chinese government is apparently edging closer to ending a ban on direct imports of whole PET scrap bottles, a move being watched in recycling circles around the world because it may mean more recycled PET exports to China and potentially less available elsewhere.

UK recycler Axion Polymers seeking partners in Asia

Sales director Keith Freegard says small-appliance makers in Asia are becoming more interested in carbon-friendly materials.

WWF helps Chinese firms slash carbon emissions

HONG KONG (November 3, 2009) -- Plastic companies in China could cut their greenhouse gas emissions by about 20 percent with a relatively small investment, under a new initiative developed by the environmental group WWF to help clean up South China’s heavily polluted Pearl River Delta region. That's according to Karen Ho, WWF’s business engagement leader in its Hong Kong office.

Chinese firms gear up for export of 'green' plastics

URUMQI, CHINA (October 27, 2009) -- China’s leading maker of wind turbine generators, Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology Co. Ltd. of Urumqi, has announced a plan to establish a joint venture epoxide resin plant, which is expected to help the parent company reduce material cost and improve quality of its wind turbine products.

Gibson and Jushi introduce new E-glass fiber

TONGXIANG, ZHEJIANG PROVINCE (October 27, 2009) -- Gibson Enterprises Inc., a U.S. fiberglass company, in conjunction with the Tongxiang-based manufacturer Jushi Group Co. Ltd., plan to release a new product the companies hope will help blunt some of the impact of the financial crisis. This will help meet requirements for an expanding range of demanding applications, said Zhang Yuqiang, chairman and president of Jushi Group.
