U.S. judge drops case alleging Teflon health risks

DES MOINES, IOWA (May 19, 2009) -- A lawsuit claiming health risks connected to DuPont Co.’s Teflon-brand fluoropolymer has been dropped in U.S. District Court in Des Moines.
The suit was dismissed May 1 by Senior Judge Ronald Longstaff. The dismissal request was made by Miami lawyer Steve Silverman -- representing 22 cases in 15 states -- and Adam Hoeflich, a Chicago
lawyer representing Wilmington, Delaware-based DuPont.
Longstaff in December had dismissed the plaintiffs’ request for a class-action suit. At the time, Longstaff said that a class-action suit would be “unmanageable,” since it would cover cookware
purchased in 23 states. The lawsuit alleged that DuPont misled consumers about the safety of cookware coated with Teflon.
“This decision supports our position that cookware coated with DuPont Teflon nonstick coatings is safe for its intended use,” said Thomas Sager, DuPont senior vice president and general counsel,
in a May 13 news release.
