European group warns of protectionism in China
GUANGZHOU, CHINA (September 8, 2009) -- The slowing global economy has prompted China to roll back some market opening policies and put in place more protectionist measures to benefit domestic companies at the expense of foreign firms, according to a Sept. 2 report from the largest European business organization in China.

Biodegradable waste bags 'more damaging' than PE
HEIDELBERG, GERMANY (September 8, 2009) -- A detailed life cycle analysis study of plastics waste bags carried out by Heidelberg's Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) has shown that traditional PE resins are less damaging in environmental terms than the biodegradable versions currently on the market in Europe.

Thai bag maker King Pac cites long-term growth plan
LAEM CHABANG, THAILAND (September 8, 2009) -- King Pac Industrial Co. Ltd. has lined up a major expansion aimed at making the company a major one of the top plastic bag makers in the world. An executive with the Laem Chabang, Thailand-based firm said the project will take a few years to complete, and will depend on raising financing.

Germany's IKV: Plasma-coated PLA could challenge PET
AACHEN, GERMANY (September 8, 2009) -- The Institut fĂĽr Kunststoffverarbeitung (IKV) plastics processing institute in Aachen believes that plasma coating -- a technique already used commercially to enhanced shelf-life performance of PET bottles -- could enable polypropylene and polylactic acid containers to meet demanding barrier-performance requirements.

Beijing Beipeng purchases XPS extrusion line


ZE75/KE250 line
BEIJING (September 1, 2009) -- Beipeng New Building Materials Co. Ltd. is the first customer in China for an expandable polystyrene foam board extrusion line from machinery maker KraussMaffei Berstorff. Beijing-based Beipeng will use the ZE75/KE250 Schaumtandex line to produce thermal insulation boards.

China's M-Tex adds support staff in U.S.
DONGGUAN, CHINA (September 1, 2009) -- Chinese mold-texturing firm M-Tex Co. Ltd. has added sales and technical support staff in Youngstown, Ohio, and Detroit -- to beef up support in the U.S. for projects being manufactured in China.

Sinochem Quanzhou licenses Unipol PP technology
QUANZHOU, CHINA (September 1, 2009) -- Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical Co. Ltd. has selected Dow Basic Plastics’ Unipol technology for its first polypropylene facility, which will become the sixth PP plant in China to license the Unipol technology.

European group seek limits on scrap exports to Asia
GUANGZHOU, CHINA (September 1, 2009) -- A European recycling organization is calling for limits on plastic scrap exports to Asia, saying that big increases in the flow of plastic waste to China are hurting Europe’s recyclers and poor working conditions and environmental practices in Asia give firms there an advantage.

Sumitomo Demag signs agreement with Sepro robots
SCHWAIG, GERMANY (September 1, 2009) -- French automation supplier Sepro Robotique will supply robots to Injection press maker Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery GmbH — and Sumitomo Demag intends to fully integrate the robots into its presses, under an agreement signed in June.

Reifenhäuser GmbH purchases Kiefel film machinery business
TROISDORF, GERMANY (September 1, 2009) -- Reifenhäuser GmbH & Co. KG Maschinenfabrik has extended its extrusion technology base by acquiring blown film machinery maker Kiefel Extrusion GmbH for undisclosed terms. Reifenhäuser Managing Director Ulrich Reifenhäuser said in a telephone interview that the extrusion machinery business is a tough one in the current economic climate.

GM will let suppliers keep more of any cost savings
DETROIT (September 1, 2009) -- The new purchasing chief of General Motors Co., seeking to spark cost-cutting ideas from suppliers, will allow parts makers to pocket a greater share of the savings they generate.

Milacron emerges from Chapter 11
BATAVIA, OHIO (August 25, 2009) -- Milacron Inc. has a new name, and a new president and CEO, as it emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Milacron LLC, a new company owned by a group of investors led by Avenue Capital Group and DDJ Capital Management LLC, completed its previously announced purchase of substantially all of the businesses and assets of Batavia-based Milacron Inc.
