Metabolix wins federal grant to develop biodegradable resins
CAMBRIDGE, MASS. (October 11, 2009) -- Bioplastics maker Metabolix has received a $350,000 federal grant that will be used to develop new, biodegradable resins for blow-molded bottles. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Co-operative State, Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) is providing the grant to Cambridge, Mass.-based Metabolix.

Vernon Alg, a Houston-based consultant who travels regularly to Asian aerospace conferences, said there are particular opportunities for plastics in refurbishment and non-structural spare parts.

Machinery imports to Mexico drop
MEXICO CITY (October 9, 2009) -- Imports of plastic processing machinery by companies in Mexico in the first half of 2009 fell 15.1 percent, according to the national plastic industries association. China, which failed to make the list of the top 11 exporters of plastic processing machinery to Mexico until 2006, occupied eighth place in 2008, with sales of $37.9 million, after leapfrogging such rivals as South Korea ($35 million), Austria ($32.1 million) and Taiwan ($20.8 million).

Composites One China to distribute closed-mold equipment
SHANGHAI (October 9, 2009) -- Shanghai-based Composites One China is now helping Magnum Venus Plastech (MVP) of Clearwater, Fla., distribute closed-mold conversion equipment and systems in the Chinese market.

BEIJING (October 6, 2009) -- After a year-long investigation, China has decided to continue to impose antidumping duties on PVC import from the United States, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Russia. The new five-year term started Sept. 29.

Nypro closing Guangzhou injection molding plant
CLINTON, MASS. (October 6, 2009) -- Nypro Inc. will close its plant in Guangzhou, China, and move production to its plant in Shenzhen. The consolidation is expected to be completed by February.

Mitsubishi, PTT consider bio venture
TOKYO (October 6, 2009) -- Japan’s Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. and Thailand’s PTT Public Co. Ltd. said they will consider forming a joint venture to manufacture bio-based polybutylene succinate.

Formosa Plastics agrees to $12.8m pollution settlement
WASHINGTON (October 6, 2009) -- Taiwan-based Formosa Plastics Corp. will pay a civil penalty of $2.8 million and spend more than $10 million on pollution controls to address air, water, and hazardous waste violations at petrochemical plants in Point Comfort, Texas, and Baton Rouge, La., the U.S. Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency announced Sept. 29.

SHANGHAI (October 6, 2009) -- BASF’s simulation software for testing engineering plastics – Ultrasim – has been available at its Shanghai technical center since 2007, but the company now is hoping it will catch the attention of China’s domestic automakers. "There is the potential to increase (engineering plastics) by more than five-fold," said Hermann Althoff, group vice president of BASF Engineering Plastics Asia Pacific.
