BASF, SINOPEC expanding Nanjing joint venture
NANJING, CHINA (July 7, 2009) -- BASF SE and Sinopec have received a green light from Beijing to expand their 50-50 joint venture BASF-YPC Co., Ltd. (BYC), in Nanjing, Jiangsu province. The Chinese central government approved the proposed project's joint feasibility study report on July 1.

China’s manufacturers mull ways to boost industry

HONG KONG (June 30, 2009) -- Stung by the collapse of their export markets, Chinese manufacturers should not look for that big volume business to return and instead ought to explore new areas such as manufacturing products targeted at niche markets, using better industrial design and looking inward at Chinese culture for inspiration. That, at least, was some of the advice coming from manufacturers and industrial designers -- like Eric Chan, a native of Guangdong province and now president of industrial design firm Ecco Design Inc. in New York -- at a Hong Kong forum on reinvigorating the sagging manufacturing industries in the Pearl River Delta.

Germany's Ossberger sees signs of automotive recovery

Negri Bossi builds 7,000-ton injection press

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Italian injection press maker Negri Bossi SpA has built a giant injection press, with 7,000 metric tons of clamping force, for a customer in Japan. The press is Negri Bossi’s largest-ever injection molding machine.

DuPont showing renewably sourced engineering resins

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- DuPont Co. arrived at NPE2009 with a product lineup self-described as the broadest range of renewably sourced engineering resins in the industry. “We have a full commercial line, and can bring performance equal to or better than that of petroleum-based products,” DuPont Engineering Polymers global business manager Marsha Craig said in an interview at NPE.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Strong growth in the wood-plastic composite market is prompting joint venture Chinese wood-plastic composite equipment maker Qinchuan-Future Plastic Machinery Co. Ltd. to consider an initial public offering, a company executive said in an interview at NPE2009. The Baoji, Shaanxi province-based company hopes to raise funds for an expansion to handle increasing demand in both China’s domestic wood-plastic composite market and in exports, said Wayne Song, director of one of the joint venture partners in the machinery maker.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Pharmaceutical and medical delivery company Hospira Inc. used multishot molding and in-mold assembly to create the iSecure Syringe with four different pieces and three materials. The product, designed by Hospira and molded by MGS Manufacturing Group, won the Industrial Designers Society of America/Plastics News Design Award at the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc.’s 2009 International Plastics Design Competition. The design is simple and straightforward at first glance -- with the different parts labeled in the mold to designate the first, second and third steps for the nurse administering the drug -- but integrating that into a complex manufacturing piece in a clean room environment was very impressive, said one of the judges.

NatureWorks doubling Ingeo PLA resin capacity

CHICAGO (June 30, 2009) -- NatureWorks LLC’s long-awaited second line to make polylactic acid comes on stream this week, boosting annual capacity for Ingeo PLA resin at its plant in Blair, Neb., from 150 million pounds (68,039 metric tons) to 300 million pounds (136,078 metric tons).

Conair scores high with $2 million in sales at NPE2009

CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) -- Conair Group Inc. sold multiple energy-efficient, single-stage PET drying systems and other equipment to two customers for a total of about $2 million in sales — a figure Conair officials characterized as being among their largest-ever NPE deals. “Orders of this sort are significant any time,” Larry Doyle, Conair’s vice president of global sales and market, said at NPE. “What’s been most exciting this week has been the fact that customers are coming to NPE eager to talk about investing in real projects.”

Rubbermaid to use Mirel bioplastic in consumer product

CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) -- Bioplastics maker Metabolix has landed a pretty big fish in the sea of consumer products: Consumer and commercial products maker Newell Rubbermaid, which will use Mirel-brand bioplastic made by Telles -- the bioplastics joint venture between Metabolix and Archer Daniels Midland -- in an unspecified consumer-based, retail product.

US plant to boost Clear Path's PET recycling capacity
