Vision Plastics buys $3 million in Toshiba presses
CHICAGO (July 14, 2009) -- Custom injection molder Vision Plastics Inc. of Wilsonville, Ore., plans to install at least 20 Toshiba electric presses as replacements for hydraulic machines in the next 30 months. Vision has equity in Hong Kong Precision Co. Ltd., which operates an injection molding facility in Shenzhen.

Thailand promoting biodegradable bag project
BANGKOK (July 14, 2009) -- BASF SE is leading a pilot project to promote the use of biodegradable bags in Thailand. The pilot project, which will run from July to December in the Samut Songkhram Province, aims to use biodegradable bags to collect household organic waste and produce high-quality compost that will serve as organic fertilizer for the purpose of soil improvement.

Thailand’s Polyplex selective about global expansion
BANGKOK (July 14, 2009) -- Film manufacturer Polyplex (Thailand) Public Co. Ltd. has put on hold US$70 million (478.06 million yuan) worth of projects due to uncertain market conditions. However, US$36.64 million (250.19 million yuan) in projects remain underway.

Singapore toolmaker JLJ Holdings plans IPO
SINGAPORE (July 9, 2009) -- JLJ Holdings Ltd plans to spend S$1.5 million (US$1.03 million or 7.04 million yuan) to buy equipment including injection molding machines for its plants in China and Malaysia. The Singapore-based toolmaker and injection molder is scheduled to launch an initial public offering on the Singapore Exchange on July 10.

Chinese supplier targets U.S. chlorinated PE market

CHICAGO (July 7, 2009) -- Sensing an opportunity from Dow Chemical Co.’s closure of a U.S. chlorinated polyethylene facility, Chinese CPE maker Dandong Decheng Chemical Co. has struck a deal with American distribution firm T&T Marketing International.

CHICAGO (July 7, 2009) -- Hong Kong-based toolmaker VEM Tooling (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd. has opened a mold making facility in Thailand because it says it sees opportunities in that country’s automotive sector.

CHICAGO (July 7, 2009) -- StackTeck Systems Ltd. is increasing its technology and capabilities through a series of partnerships announced during NPE2009, including a development partnership with Hong Kong-based Matrix Technology Specialists Ltd., to further expand StackTeck's manufacturing capabilities in Asia.

Despite recession, processors still like medical market
NEW YORK (July 7, 2009) -- Medical manufacturers still are projecting solid, and in some cases, double-digit growth, but they say device manufacturers and hospitals are being more cautious and delaying some projects. UPG International told Plastics News that the company is "getting close to where will have to again expand” the clean room capacities at its Tijuana, Fremont, and Suzhou plants.

Cancer claims UK gas injection pioneer
LLANGIAN, WALES (July 7, 2009) -- Gas molding pioneer Terry Pearson, former sales director of Cinpres Gas Injection Ltd., died June 12 from cancer at the age of 77 after more than 50 years in the plastics industry.

Bankruptcy court approves sale of Milacron

CINCINNATI (July 7, 2009) -- Bankruptcy Judge J. Vincent Aug Jr. has approved Milacron Inc’s sale to two investor groups that bought the debt of the maker of plastics machinery and industrial fluids — despite opposition from unsecured creditors and the company’s joint venture partner in India.

Teijin restructuring, exits NatureWorks PLA venture
OSAKA, JAPAN (July 7, 2009) -- Osaka-based Teijin Ltd. has ended its involvement in the NatureWorks LLC polylactic acid (PLA) bioplastics business, transferring its 50 percent shareholding over to its joint venture partner Cargill Inc. The NatureWorks manufacturing plant in Blair, Neb., is currently the world’s largest PLA bioplastic production plant.

Bemis to acquire Alcan Packaging Food Americas
NEENAH, WIS. (July 7, 2009) -- North America’s largest film and sheet maker just got a whole lot bigger. Bemis Co. Inc., a packaging giant based in Neenah, Wis., announced July 6 that it will spend $1.2 billion to acquire the Food Americas business of Alcan Packaging from Rio Tinto plc. Bemis has a partnership venture in Guangzhou.

Tests show recyclers can separate PLA from PET
WASHINGTON (July 7, 2009) -- Some recyclers have been concerned that as more companies use bottles made from polylactic acid, those containers may contaminate the PET recycling stream. But tests at a full-scale recycler suggest that near infrared technology can effectively separate PLA and PET.
