Therma-Tru and Fypon merge, consolidate operations
By Matt Griswold
PLASTICS NEWS

MAUMEE, OHIO (October 15, 2009) -- The parent company of Maumee-based entry door maker Therma-Tru Inc. and Archbold, Ohio-based polyurethane and PVC millwork maker Fypon Ltd. are merging the two companies and consolidating some of the operations as part of a cost-cutting strategy.

Beginning Jan. 1, Fypon employees will become Therma-Tru employees, but the Fypon products will continue to be marketed and sold under the Fypon brand name.

Therma-Tru and Fypon are owned by Deerfield, Ill.-based Fortune Brands Inc.

A small percentage of Fypon’s PU production in Archbold will be moved to the company’s plant in Yantai, China, which will eliminate about 50 jobs.

Operations are not expected to change at Therma-Tru’s door-making plant in Butler, Ind.

The Fypon brand will get a shot in the arm from this deal, gaining a national sales force via Therma-Tru’s sales team.

“Having national sales coverage is something they’ve never had before,” Therma-Tru spokeswoman Ashley Lumm said in an Oct. 13 telephone interview. “There are synergies for both sides.”

Therma-Tru makes both fiberglass and steel entry and patio doors. The company is the market leader in the fiberglass entry door category.

Fiberglass is expected to make up about 30 percent of the entry door market in 2010.
