Qinchuan-Future Plastic mulls initial public offering
 Song
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Strong growth in the wood-plastic composite market is prompting joint venture Chinese wood-plastic composite equipment maker Qinchuan-Future Plastic Machinery Co.
Ltd. to consider an initial public offering, a company executive said in an interview at NPE2009. The Baoji, Shaanxi province-based company hopes to raise funds for an expansion to handle increasing
demand in both China’s domestic wood-plastic composite market and in exports, said Wayne Song, director of one of the joint venture partners in the machinery maker.
International Plastics Design award winners announced
 Hospira's award-winning iSecure syringe
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (June 30, 2009) -- Pharmaceutical and medical delivery company Hospira Inc. used multishot molding and in-mold assembly to create the iSecure Syringe with four different pieces and
three materials. The product, designed by Hospira and molded by MGS Manufacturing Group, won the Industrial Designers Society of America/Plastics News Design Award at the Society of the
Plastics Industry Inc.’s 2009 International Plastics Design Competition. The design is simple and straightforward at first glance -- with the different parts labeled in the mold to designate the
first, second and third steps for the nurse administering the drug -- but integrating that into a complex manufacturing piece in a clean room environment was very impressive, said one of the judges.
Jwell building new factory, mulling acquisition
CHICAGO (June 26, 2009) -- Chinese equipment maker Shanghai Jwell Extrusion Machinery Co. Ltd. is building a new factory in Suzhou to significantly expand its capacity, as executives say they are

China’s manufacturers mull ways to boost industry
 Chan
HONG KONG (June 30, 2009) -- Stung by the collapse of their export markets, Chinese manufacturers should not look for that big volume business to return and instead ought to explore new areas such as
manufacturing products targeted at niche markets, using better industrial design and looking inward at Chinese culture for inspiration. That, at least, was some of the advice coming from
manufacturers and industrial designers -- like Eric Chan, a native of Guangdong province and now president of industrial design firm Ecco Design Inc. in New York -- at a Hong Kong forum on
reinvigorating the sagging manufacturing industries in the Pearl River Delta.

response to a growing PU market in both countries.
China revises Albemarle’s global balance
 Sun
GUANGZHOU (June 16, 2009) -- Breakthrough growth in China, combined with a downturn in other regions, is making the Chinese market more important than ever on Albemarle Corp.’s global roadmap. Sales
generated in China will make up for nearly a quarter of the U.S.-based company’s 2009 global sales, a substantial jump from 5 percent in 2008, according to John Sun, Greater China managing director.
During a recent interview at the Cross-Strait Plastics Industry Summit 2009 in Guangzhou, he told Plastics News that the breakthrough’s relatively short time period was made possible partly
by supplying polymer curative to China’s government-funded, high-speed railway projects.
Sichuan reconstruction craves building materials
 Building materials on display
GUANGHZOU (June 9, 2009) -- The demand for plastic products created by post-earthquake reconstruction projects in Sichuan province can be measured by these goals: In the next three years, the province
plans to rebuild 51,000 kilometers of road, 5,500 kilometers of railroad lines, 17,000 schools, 9,700 medical facilities, 5,300 kilometers of gas pipeline, and 6,970 kilometers of water supply
pipeline. In addition to the 1.7 trillion yuan reconstruction projects, the provincial government will invest 3 trillion yuan on industrial development.
Public projects boost China’s wood-plastic industry
 Wood-plastic composite products
GUANGZHOU (June 9, 2009) -- Despite the decline of overseas markets, China’s largely export-oriented wood-plastic composite manufacturers continue to expand, thanks to demand from domestic public
projects such as post-earthquake reconstruction and China-hosted international events. For instance, Anhui Guofeng Wood-plastic Science & Technology Co. Ltd. confirmed that export demand has been
contracting due to the global economic crisis. Meantime, domestic consumers have become more aware of wood-plastic composite materials.
Resin makers realizing China’s import potential
 Hanck
GUANGZHOU (June 2, 2009) -- Just a few years ago, China was mainly a cheap export base, where products were made and sent elsewhere around the world. These days, the reverse is increasingly true:
China’s growing domestic market is attracting more attention, particularly from global resin makers. “There is real demand in the domestic China market,” said Hong Kong-based Philippe Hanck of
DuPont’s engineering polymers unit. He said DuPont has seen a tangible effect from China’s government stimulus spending in automotive, rail, mobile phones and renewable energy.

Hong Kong rotomolder endeavors to build its brand
Li Kam of MP Engineering Co. Ltd.
HONG KONG (April 28, 2009) -- Small manufacturers in China these days are always told to improve themselves by developing their own brands and using industrial design to make better products. Li Kam,
director of Hong Kong-based rotational molder MP Engineering Co. Ltd., has tried both and can say it’s perhaps easier said than done. His company, which was Hong Kong’s first rotational molding
firm when it started in 1990, decided in 2002 to launch its own product line. That venture into brand marketing has enjoyed some success, but it hasn’t worked as well as he’d first hoped, Li said
during an April 22 interview at the Hong Kong Houseware Fair.

market.
