Ashley's new factory to use Chinese-made machines
TIANJIN (August 11, 2009) -- Indiana-based Ashley Industrial Molding Inc. is investing about $15 million to open its second plant, a factory in Iowa that will run three mammoth 4,000-ton machines to compression mold sheet molding compound. The machines were made by Tianjin Tianduan Press Co. Ltd.

SPI offers guide to bioplastics
WASHINGTON (August 11, 2009) — The Society of the Plastics Industry Inc. has created the Bioplastics Industry Overview Guide, a 26-page digital publication that, according to SPI officials, “fills the void for a comprehensive encapsulation of this relatively new but fast-growing market.â€

Mill Valley becomes 24th Calif. town to ban PS packaging
MILL VALLEY, CALIF. (August 11, 2009) -- Another California city has banned the use of polystyrene take-out packaging. Mill Valley, a town of nearly 15,000 four miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, approved a ban on Aug. 3 that will go into effect Nov. 2.

US sets duties on plastic bags from Thailand
WASHINGTON (August 11, 2009) -- In a preliminary ruling, the U.S. Commerce Department has levied the highest possible anti-dumping duty of 122.88 percent on plastic bags exported to the U.S. by Master Packaging Co. Ltd. of Bangkok, Thailand. The agency said the company did not respond to the agency’s request for information.

U.S. sets duties on plastic bags from China
WASHINGTON (August 4, 2009) — Plastic bags from Zhongshan, Guangdong-based Rally Plastics Co. Ltd. that were exported to the U.S. between August 2007 and July 2008 may be levied anti-dumping duties of 17.95 percent, according to a preliminary decision by the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Gurit acquires stake in Chinese firm
ZURICH (August 4, 2009) -- Swiss composite firm Gurit plans to strengthen its position in the wind turbine market after negotiating a deal to acquire a majority stake in an unnamed Chinese structural foam company in Qingdao, Shandong province. Gurit also owns a foam plant in Tianjin.

Australia investigating LLDPE dumping complaint
CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA (August 4, 2009) -- The Australian Customs & Border Protection Service (ACBPS) is investigating allegations that North American manufacturers have dumped linear low density polyethylene into the Australian market. Australia’s sole LLDPE manufacturer Qenos Pty. Ltd. initiated the investigation. Qenos is a subsidiary of China National Bluestar (Group) Co. Ltd.

U.S. partner to help Shandong Rike export additives
PHILADELPHIA (August 4, 2009) -- Chinese additive supplier Shandong Rike Chemical Co. Ltd. has struck a marketing partnership with U.S. firm Performance Additives LLC, hoping to take advantage of what they say are opportunities for new players in North America’s beleaguered additives sector.

Dow plans to sell PS, ABS, SAN and PC businesses
MIDLAND, MICH. (August 4, 2009) -- Changes continue at Dow Chemical Co., as the global plastics leader plans to sell off a newly formed unit that includes its styrenics and polycarbonate holdings. The unit — named Styron Corp. — will include Dow’s polystyrene, ABS, SAN, PC, styrene monomer, styrene-butadiene rubber and latex assets. Those businesses have annual sales of about $5 billion.

Nissei boosts capacity of new Taicang factory
TAICANG, JIASNGSU (August 4, 2009) -- The global economic downturn has pushed Japanese injection press maker Nissei Plastic Industrial Co. Ltd. to significantly boost capacity for its planned Chinese factory, its first manufacturing facility outside Japan.

China's beverage industry increases packaging demand
SHANGHAI (August 4, 2009) -- Despite upheaval in global markets and a sharp drop in exports, China's domestic beverage industry is bubbling. Consumers are drinking more soft drinks and downing iced green teas, driving up demand for plastic beverage containers.

PTS names South China business development rep
SHANGHAI (August 4, 2009) -- Polymer Technology & Services (HK) Ltd. named Steve Chen Ning business development representative for South China. He will be based in Guangdong and report to the general manager – Asia in its Shanghai office.

China XD talks about U.S. listing, expansion plans
HARBIN, CHINA (August 4, 2009) -- After years of preparation, automotive compounder China XD Plastics Co. Ltd. earlier this year achieved its goal of becoming China’s first plastics material company listed on a U.S. stock exchange. Chairman and CEO Jie Han in Harbin, Heilongjiang province, and Chief Financial Officer Taylor Zhang in New York recently spoke with Plastics News in a phone interview, offering insight into the company’s performance, expansion plans and market trends in China’s auto industry.

Bioplastics industry joins oxo-degradable debate
BERLIN (July 28, 2009) -- European Bioplastics, the Berlin-based trade association representing producers of bio-based or biodegradable plastics, hit out at manufacturers of plastics containing degradable additives, accusing them of making misleading claims and failing to live up to international and acknowledged standards.

Patel wants to buy Milacron's India JV

AHMEDABAD, INDIA (July 28, 2009) -- Mahendra N. Patel, who partnered with Milacron Inc. in 1995 to create a plastics machinery joint venture in India, now wants to buy the operation. Patel said he held a meeting with officials from Avenue Capital Group, one of the investment firms that is buying Milacron out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
